They probably didn't reproduce stripes when it was repainted. It's worth something, even if it isn't real - it would cost something to find a solid car and turbo just to build a clone. A person would have to take time and research the previous owners and document the car themselves.

Hmmm, what are the odds of finding a turbo on a Vega?

Probably about the same as being struck by lightning while being attacked by a shark.

Someone with NCIB access should run the VIN and see what's up. 1V77B3U266544

Don't care if it's a Yenko or not...it's cool either way...I like the way those Vegas look.

Stinger on Ebay

Anyone ever see or hear of this car? Tom, any idea if its verifed as real? If it is, it would be a neat piece to restore. Someone get this one and have it ready for SCR8!

[/ QUOTE ]

As per the car itself, I do not have anything, so without paperwork, the NICB would be the only way to identify the selling dealer.

In regards to the turbo unit, I have 3 folders of Yenko Vega stuff, including Schwitzer blueprints, drawings with part numbers and some pictures of Yenko cars with a turbo installed. Judging by what I can see in the pictures posted by the seller, this does not appear to be a Yenko installed turbo unit nor a Yenko kit. Without going into a lot of boring detail, from late '71 on, Yenko tubos/kits were plumbed in a different way, more in line with what Chevrolet was experimenting with at the time. Judging by what is contained in some of the correspondence between Yenko and Schwitzer, I am not for sure if Yenko actually ever offered the turbo/kit for sale. In the past 8 years, I have only seen one documented unit.

This is the second such type of Vega turbo unit I have seen for sale on Ebay in the last 6 months. The other one, which was just a turbo and kit, was plumbed in the same manner as this one. From the mid '70s to the early '80, Vega turbo kits were very popular, available from several different sources. Hot Rod magazine did an article or two on such units.

I saw some magazine ads for the Yenko turbo Vega and they said it was a Rajay turbo. It looked like the turbo mounting was similar to the one on Ebay, but it appeared to be mounted more forward in the car. The ads I found on the internet and you can't see the detail well enough.

In early '71, Yenko was experimenting with Rajay on a prototype or two. But in mid to late '71 Yenko switched to Schwitzer. I am guessing because of the problems he was having with the EPA and emissions.

The ads were from 1971 and they were different ads that look like they are from Car Craft and Hot Rod and they both show the Rajay turbo. So he didn't end up using the Rajay turbo at all?

I cannot say for sure he did not use the Rajay, but from what I have read, the Rajay was only used on a prototype or two. Everything I have points to Schwitzer as being the provider for the Yenko turbo kits. But, as I said, not for sure how many, if any, were sold to the public. In one memo to Schwitzer, Don mentions that the EPA may not allow him to sell the units, period. In addition, Don was having supply/shipping problems with Schwitzer. The folders are interesting reading, including a memo or two from Don concerning the 50,000 mile EPA durability test.
