Tell me about it. I looked for one for about 1 1/2 years before I decided to have mine restored. There is a guy about 50 miles from me that does them. He did a great job at what I think is a reasonable price. He did the steering wheel and shroud for $325 with a 3 year guarantee. I also had him redo two of the shrouds that I posted pictures of. I think he advertises in Hemmings Motor News

SS is for Camaro. Camaro only used SS.

SS396 is for Chevelle

Super Sport is for Nova

My 68 L78 ss 68 Camaro has the origional wheel and was built the 4th week of Jan/68 and it has an ss emblem.

Here's a pic of a guarenteed un-tampered with '68 Chevelle interior...it has the plain "SS" but that's not to say it's the only correct emblem. I've seen original '68 Chevelles with SS396 emblems on the horn shroud as well. I think it's like the different variations of 396 fender bezels, it depended on when and where the car was built.
