That is the US Navy's F4 "Black Bunny" Playboy Phantom breaking the sound barrier. In 1971, it was legal to fly the speed of sound over the continental US (at least they did on the Air Force base I lived on).

That's gotta be photoshopped..750 mph thirty feet off the deck at a civilian airport? Is that a COPO Biscayne wagon about to lose it's date coded glass?

Heres the pic again with the Caption. Notice someone else claims taking it as well but I would have to go with the folks at McDonnell Douglas Corp who have the pic in the gallery

F-4 Phantoms were particularly loud due to their engine
design. Seeing them fly in formation type maneuvers was
always a thrill. I can't imaging the sound of this F-4
breaking the sound barrier so close to the deck. It would
have been one of those "once-in-a-lifetime" type memories.

Wish I'd been there

Steve

Very cool shot! . Wouldn't that hurt if you were on the ground and enveloped in the boom? . Hey....another '70 Townsman wagon! ~ Pete

Here's a link to a clip of a jet breaking the sound barrier over the ocean with the same effect. Pretty cool clip.
