I was always under the impression that they got the dual snorkel air cleaner if they did not have the functional cowl hood ... there goes another "myth"

That's a partly true myth & it wasn't a California thing either.
For the LS-6 Chevelle, the anomaly dual snorkle was possible from any of one of it's assembly plants during it's later assemblies for a brief time, including Van Nuys be it with or w/o NA-9.
3 types of air cleaners were indicated in box 55 of it's buildsheet.
SS the std. SS pckg. Open element.(No flapper hood)
DG the optional ZL-2 working flapper hood w/seal.
CO the Dual Snorkle.(No flapper hood)..and was at assembly lines discretion, not salesmans or new owner.

My 05D Arlington car is a Dual Snorkle. Also came with Generals. Here's the original spare.

Both of those cars together would make and incredible pair of Survivors. If you didn't know the History of the cars, its hard to believe that they survived in the condition which they did. If you ever have a chance to view either of these magnificent Survivors, do not pass it up.
