Weren't the 409s good for bending pushrods when getting into the upper RPM ranges?

No more than an L-78 as far as I know. Both engines had push rods that were not lined up with the centerline of the lifter.

I have a 62 bubbletop with 409/409. It is all stock except I am running 2 1/2 inch exhaust instead of 2 1/4 inch exhaust out past the rear wheels.

I ran the car at the Nostalgia drags at Pacific Raceways back in 2002 and it ran a best of 13.54 @ 106mph with slicks on it. My best times were achieved by launching at around 3800 rpm. I was running no air cleaner and 110 octane leaded fuel. Launching at under 3800 rpm, the car would hook up great but would bog down for a half second before taking off. I would shift that little spaghetti stick shifter at around 6000 rpm as it all started to fall away above 6000 rpm. Not sure if my timing wasn't advanced enough or the fuel pump couldn't keep up or what, but it seemed to just really fall away above 6000 rpm so I just shifted for the next gear. Car was a 4.11 posi so I was going through the traps around 5000 rpm or so if I remember right. Was a lot of fun as the car really seemed to pull like hell in the top of 2nd and 3rd gear. I went for another run hoping to get an even better time by launching around 4200 rpm and when I dumped the clutch, the car just sat there! Snapped an axle off right inside the pumpkin. Oh well, was a great effort!

Another note, I ran the car at another nostalgia race at Bremerton Raceway about the same time 2001 or 2002. I was lined up against a Camaro, but there was a black 406 tripower '62 Ford a few cars back so the starting officials pulled him out of line and up next to me and the announcers made a big deal of this '62 versus '62 shootout. Well, it wasn't much of a shoot out as I jumped him at the tree and put him away by probably 6 or more car lengths!

Lots of fun and haven't run the car since, other than leaving occasional black stripes on the street with the 8.00 x 14 Silvertowns.

Sounds like we both had fun Paul. I launched at 4000 with a wide ratio box, 4.56s and slicks. Went through the traps at 5700. I was embarrassed one time with a sheared axle at the line, then I started scribing a line down the length of the axles and checking them after each weekend. When they twisted 1/2 way around, I'd change them out for another fresh pair. Threw a lot of them away but never broke another one. They served me well as my launch shock absorbers.

No and I forgot SS Z28 and L78 too. I don't want to sell my hoarded cool stuff, but it would be wasted sitting in the trunk of my little SS350 that will probably never compete in a show. I'm sure we all feel that way. I'm as attached to the cool parts I've accumulated as the car itself.
