I recently acquired this interesting steering wheel. It is the 1970 fat grip steering comfort grip steering wheel. This style wheel was an option on Buick GSX models and also used in the Yenko Deuce Novas.
I always thought these were only made in black. This one is white/parchment and has an opalescence to it. It is dirty/discolored on much of the wheel with one portion that is quite clean like it was out of the elements. The wheel has awesome grain and is quite possibly NOS. Has anyone seen another one of these wheels in any color than black? Any ideas what this wheel could be? Prototype? It came out of Ohio. Does anyone know where the factory was that produced these wheels? Thanks, Jason |

----A thought would be that it was meant for that orange 70 GS show car that had a complete white interior including the carpet. I saw that car at Mecum Indy several years ago, but can't quite remember what wheel was actually in it. Since it was a GM showcar, it's possible that there was more than one made. GM could afford it,,,LOL! I have an NOS teak wheel with paperwork from the manufacturer and I'll go out on a limb and say this white wheel also came from them. I'll post the name later today when I'm out in the cave. Quite a find and very cool....Bill S

Probably made at the Inland division in Vandalia Ohio (north of Dayton).
May have been a mold try-out part before the carbon black was added to the resin. I've seen a few weird wheels where they were changing colors and the wheels were streaked with the different colors. Most all were scrapped but a few are hanging on walls.

----The Buick GSX wheel pictured in the Mecum add even looks like it has discoloration similar to Supernova's pictured wheel. Maybe just light dirt....Bill S

The wheel in the auction pictures is actually the 16 in wheel with the thumb groove on the front and stainless ring on the side. It does look like the same color though. Thanks again for all the replies.

I went ahead and put this wheel on eBay starting at $9.99 with no reserve. I will put an ad in the for sale section with a link in case anyone is interested in it.
Thanks, Jason |
