Default Steve McQueen's Bullitt Chase Video

I always loved this chase scene. It was insane! And on bias ply tires!

Is that the scene where the wheel is hopping up and down like crazy?
Definitely one of my favorite chases

That scene where he understeered past the mark is when they took the keys from him and threw them to Cary Loftin for the rest of the dynamic filming

The Chase

[/ QUOTE ]
The cars were equipped with Radial tires for the chase scene,or I should say the cars in the chase scene used radial tires. I have studied this scene 100 times and have noticed the subtle differences in the cars. Near as I can tell both Mustangs had the same tires, early articles state the cars were equipped with Firestone Sports Car Radials. The Charger in Early scenes had Goodyear Custom power Cushion Bias Ply tires with the three ring white walls. These can be seen where the Charger pulls up a few blocks behind the phone booth and again where they are stalking Mcqueen after the car wash. When the Charger bolts up the hill it is clearly on different tires. The car Life artucle states "the Charger tires were trimmed down to handicap it,as it would run circles around the Mustang". There are a few differences between the two Chargers that evidence there were two cars. The Mustangs are well documented as there being two cars.

Paul, That is really interesting. I never knew that there were tire changes. I figured they were running stock bias ply tires.

I also recall reading for the Stang they went even smaller to do the spin out scene at the end of the chase, is that still correct or wrong info???

One of the Chargers used was also originally white, as you can see in one of the shots the white paint underneath the scraped up black. Also, you will see that the wheelcovers on the Charger are on and off and back on in different scenes.
