This rare and highly collectable 1958 Ford Fairlane Sunliner 500 “Junior” has been completely restored to show quality condition. This Junior is powered electrically by a 12-volt battery and is equipped with working headlights and taillights. Ford Motor Company had a 3-year relationship with the Junior car manufacturer Powercar of Mystic, Connecticut. They began making Thunderbirds in 1955 and started producing a “Junior” Mercury in 1957. For reasons lost to time, the Sunliner’s were contracted to be built by Donalson Manufacturing Company of Kansas City, Kansas. These were released in 1957 and continued in 1958 with the new styling details to correspond to the full-size cars seen on the dealership showroom floors. These fascinating “toys” were used in a number of promotional ways; most of which were designed to entice the youngsters to the dealership with their full-size car buying parents in tow. The main thing was to get the name and address of the children’s folks and what they were currently driving. This was a novel way to go about the sales technique, but given the enduring popularity these scaled-down cars continue to exhibit the memories from accompanying mom and dad to the local dealership many have more to do with these models instead of the real thing. This Junior was the product of a full restoration which was completed in 2021. The restorer is a professional car restorer who treated this restoration like one of his beloved full size cars. The body was removed and everything was stripped off the frame. The thick wall steel tube welded frame was sand blasted, rust proofed and painted black. The fiberglass body was powder coated, sanded and buffed for durability. The paint work consists of sealer, red base coat and three coats of premium clear coat. Nothing but the best materials available were used throughout. The hood scoop induction, front grill and insert and side molding was painted gray. The side molding center was painted gold. The windshield plastic was replaced new. The front windshield trim, vent window trim and heavy-gauge bumpers were re-chromed. The chrome fender trim pieces, vehicle dual mirrors and tail light bezel are like new. It sits on new wheels with aluminum hub caps. The wheels are wrapped with new whitewall tires. The tan steering wheel matches the German leather upholstered seat. The leather was left over from a 1972 BMW 3.0cs coupe restoration. The motor was completely overhauled so it works excellent. The 12-volt battery is new and has trickle charger cord for charging after use. The headlights and taillights are in working order. It is equipped with a key switch for the motor operation. The body does lift up from the frame as demonstrated in the photos provided for servicing and cleaning purposes. This is a very rare piece of automotive automobilia that will make a great addition to any collection.
