1968 Z28 Pace Car at Road America
I just saw this picture of a 1968 Z28 June Sprints pace car from 1968 Road America. Notice the ZL2 hood on this car?

I believe that is the green Z28 convert. owned by Dana Mecum. Look for it at MCACN this year.

----Hope I don't get corrected, but I think it was done specifically for Pete Estes. The story goes(I think) that they (some group in the tech center) were trying to solidify the Z/28s production, but knew Pete really liked convertibles. So,,,(drum roll) they built a vert for him with just about all the available options (4-wheel disc and all). OK,,,Go ahead and straighten me out!......Bill S

The car was built for Estes as a standard production '68 Z/28; I have copies of paperwork for it. The Tech Center added the hood & cross-ram for display at racing events.
It was built very late in the '68 model year and had nothing to do with JL8 and cross-ram development. Those parts were released March '68 at a Chevy Press Review, long before the car was built. |
