Default *For Sale 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle

FOR SALE 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle. Fully documented with GM of Canada Documentation and Registered in the 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Registry. SOLD new at the Infamous Berger Chevrolet in GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan.

Some of you will most likely remember this very rare and unique Chevelle...as I offered it for sale back in 2014.
Here is your chance to own what I believe is the very best restored Canadian Built and Documented GARNET RED 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle on the planet.

I have known of this Chevelle since 2007....I was involved with the restoration....and supplied the owner at the time with some very rare and hard to find parts. In fact I supplied the owner with a very rare and original GM “Rubber Floor Mat”. These are near impossible to find today.

This Chevelle was Meticulously Restored by GS (George Steele) Restorations, in Joelton, TN.

There are ONLY a handful of these magnificent 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan that exist today, even fewer in Garnet Red.

The Chevelle is currently located just outside of Los Angeles, California.

Here is a great story.... as narrated from the original owner.

Doug Harrison was 18 years old in the summer of 1969 and decided he wanted to buy a new Camaro. He takes the 20 minute drive to the infamous Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids Michigan. While looking at the Camaro’s he spotted a Garnet Red 69 Chevelle SS396 300 Deluxe shining and looking mean! He forgot what he came there for a Camaro and fell in love with the Chevelle and had to have it. They would not sell him the Chevelle and he had to go home and get his Mother to sign for him. Imagine the begging and pleading that was going on! Mom finally caved-in and Doug got his bright new 1969 Garnet Red Chevelle. What Doug didn’t realize.....he purchased a very rare 1 year only Post Sedan SS396 Chevelle, the only year you could get a Super Sport with the 300 Deluxe platform . He did what everybody did back then, he “Day2'd’ it. Headers, Cragars, Hijackers, Intake, Carb, etc. There was no numbers matching, correct finish back then. Doug even puts a 4 speed in it.... as it came with a heavy duty 3 speed Muncie for one more gear to spin. It already had Chambered exhaust from the factory, something that GM stopped putting on Chevelles a month or so earlier but it was built in Canada at the Oshawa plant and didn’t have to follow the same rules as the US cars. Doug loved the Chevelle and said he waxed it almost every day! As the family grew....the Chevelle got too small, the gas doubled and was hard to find.... Doug sold the Chevelle in 1973. It exchanged hands a few times until 1987 and was left for dead. With several “I am going to restore it” it stayed not running for 20 years until the current owner purchased it off eBay in 2007.

Car was reunited with original owner at the 2013 Berger Chevy Show in Grand Rapids, MI. The owner and his wife were allowed to drive the Chevelle again just like the summer of 69!

Here is your opportunity to own what I believe is the Very Best restored Garnet Red, Canadian Built and Documented SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle on the Planet.

This Chevelle is Authenticated and Registered in the 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Registry.

I have included the detailed inspection that was performed by Write Angle Productions, from Greenbrier, TN. on July, 27th, 2014.

1969 Chevelle SS396 Two-Door Sedan

Built for one year only, the 1969 SS396 two-door sedan is a very rare and desirable Chevelle for enthusiasts and collectors alike. Based on the Chevelle 300 Deluxe platform, the sedan version of this popular musclecar is currently coveted because of its unique appearance and rarity, while “back in the day” it was sought after by racing enthusiasts because of the additional rigidity provided by the sedan configuration as well as the lighter weight of the “stripped down” 300 Deluxe body.

This particular Chevelle SS396 sedan presents itself as a fresh, current state-of-the-art restoration, completed by a very respected member of the musclecar restoration community. With these credentials, one should expect a restoration of a very high caliber, and this Chevelle will meet or exceed most expectations. Not surprisingly, the original, matching numbers block was destroyed early in the Chevelle’s life, and has been replaced during restoration with an engine featuring correct date castings and stampings. The unusual heavy-duty three-speed transmission has also been replaced at the time of restoration, although the rearend (3.31 posi) appears to be original.

It’s the type of car that will easily achieve high awards at local/regional car shows and will certainly garner plenty of attention at any cruise-in; the red paint, seldom-seen body style, and high degree of restoration assure that. Showing at a national level – even marque specific - will also result in very high scoring and garnering of a multitude of prestigious awards. In fact, it has quite a resume already. Avid Chevelle cognoscenti will be able to find small incorrect details that may detract from the national level scoring, but most are very easy fixes, and in doing so will ensure that this Chevelle earns top honors at whatever level it is shown.

The critique sheet I have prepared is divided into five categories: overall, chassis, body, drivetrain, and interior. Photos in each section are numbered and will match to the similarly numbered captions. The information is intended to provide information and insight regarding the item(s) being discussed. They should not be misconstrued as “must do” mandates, and may be employed instead to help attain whichever level of restoration you decide to pursue. If you have any questions, David, please contact me by phone or email, whichever is easiest.

OVERALL – EVALUATION

This 1969 Chevelle SS396 sedan presents itself very well upon initial and in-depth visual inspection. It has been the recipient of a recent. The frame-off restoration makes it appear even better than the day it rolled off the assembly line; this is how GM should have/would have hand-built cars given sufficient time and inclination . The old, original exterior sheetmetal that was damaged or rusted has been replaced with all new replacement panels using a mix of reproduction and original GM sheetmetal. The body panels are in excellent alignment, reflecting the considerable time spent on getting the fit and finish as good as possible. The exterior brightwork and trim are also reflective of the care and consideration that has been lavished on this Chevelle during its restoration.

There are reproduction pieces that were used during the restoration, generally of good to very good quality. Obviously, NOS or good quality original parts that have been correctly restored would have been more desirable, and also would help garner more points during the judging process at national shows. Many of the reproduction parts, however, are easy to access/replace once suitable NOS or restored original parts are located. Nevertheless, this is one of the best Chevelle restorations to be inspected recently.

BODY – EVALUATION

After seeing the “before” pictures of this Chevelle, it’s apparent that a lot of work, parts, and effort have gone into bringing it back to its former glory. The bodywork is first-class with straight-as-a-string body panels and excellent panel fitment. Door gaps, fender gaps and deck lid gaps are all very consistent and well within factory specs. The paint used is a base coat/clear coat in the original hue of Garnet red. This color appears to have been very closely matched to the original, and applied expertly with the result being waaaaay beyond what the factory ever offered. This car was constructed to take home the gold at most any outing, and was given all the attention it needed to meet or exceed those expectations.

1. Overall shot of Chevelle; high front drivers side.
2. Overall shot of Chevelle; high rear passenger side.
3. Overall shot of Chevelle; eye-level front drivers side.
4. Overall shot of Chevelle; eye-level rear drivers side.
5. Factory trunk spatter is difficult to replicate; this is one of the best jobs I’ve seen. Correct colors and “big” spatters….
6. Yellow limited slip warning label is endemic only to Canadian-built cars; very nice touch, and often overlooked when attempting to achieve correct appearance.
7. Lower rear of replacement quarter panel shows that it was mig-welded in place and body-worked to a smooth finish. Original quarter showed “dimpled” spotwelds here. Not critical, but might cost a point or two in judging IF the judge knows what he’s looking for.
8. Lower rocker flange shows proper “dimpled” pinch welds. Nice, straight flanges that are often bent or damaged from improper placing of floor jacks, jack stands, or plain ol’ curb-jumpin’ carelessness.
9. Same rocker flange, looking from rear.
10. Nice stencil detail on new gas tank.
11. Correct “white” seam sealer used to retain body plugs.
12. Headlights are reproduction T3s, with correct vertical lines; passenger side.
13. Ditto, driver side.
14. Front passenger door gap and panel alignment.
15. Rear passenger door gap and panel alignment.
16. Quarter panel end cap fit and finish, passenger side.
17. Quarter panel end cap fit and finish, driver side.
18. Very nice fit on reproduction t/l bezel and lens, driver side.
19. Ditto, Passenger side.
20. Overall rear view shows great panel alignment and straight bumper installation.
21. Coveted “Berger” dealer emblem has been faithfully restored and reinstalled.
22. This is a tough bodyline to get right. This is as good as I’ve seen on any ’69; passenger side.
23. Ditto, driver side.
24. Front driver door gap and panel alignment.
25. Reproduction mirror. Missing “parting” line in base casting. NOS parts are out there, but a bit pricy. Still, I’d replace it because of its high visibility.
26. Duplicate: Ignore
27. Rear driver door gap and panel alignment.
28. Correct ’69 antennae base and “oval” telescoping mast.
29. Based on the “300 Deluxe” model, the SS396’s windshield wipers are correctly visible, not concealed behind hood.
30. NOS plastic inner fenders are hard to find (and expensive!); they are installed on both sides.
31. See above. Also, correct ribbed heater hoses, without the goofy “GM” stamps all over them.
32. Proper dark gray phosphate finish on hood striker assembly. Also notice nice overspray on leading edge of hood underside.
33. Hood latch is also properly plated with gray phosphate, and the proper bolts used with correct markings.
34. Close-up of fitment and installation of driver side grill extension and moldings.
35. Header fit and hood gap, driver side.
36. Header fit and hood gap, passenger side.
37. Close-up of fitment and installation of passenger side grill extension and moldings.
38. You have love it when the backup lights work. That’s attention to the “small” stuff!

CHASSIS – EVALUATION

The frame has been separated from the body during the restoration, as evidenced by the “factory” fresh refinish. The Chevelle is fairly representative of current, state-of-the-art restoration, using well-developed techniques and processes to achieve very satisfactory results. In fact, there are certain areas of the car that are “over” restored for the sake of improved appearance, and/or to get the judges attention as they pore over the niggling details that separate the “great” cars from the “incredible” cars. Even so, none of the overly-restored components detract heavily from the overall appearance or diminish the quality of craftsmanship shown here.

1. Several things are visible here: the correct GB tag on the rear spring, The reproduction spiral shocks (not dated), and the detailing of the brake backing plates, plus the use of correct reproduction brake tubing.
2. The rear frame crossmember has been meticulously restored and covered with correct chassis black paint. The hardware head markings are correct as is their plating. A new rear snubber has also been installed.
3. Frame tag “XK” is correctly coded, and placed “upside down” like the factory did, since the frames were stacked that way, and the parts pickers could more easily read the tags. Inside of wheelwells is coated with undercoating, although the factory was never this generous, nor as careful during application.
4. Front passenger side suspension shows great attention to detail, with proper finishes, bare steel where appropriate, and the correct stickers and paint dabs.
5. Ditto, driver’s side front suspension.
6. Manual steering box has been completely rebuilt and correctly finished.
7. Here you can see the correct “AU” steering box code as well as the splined and bolted rag joint flange that is specific to the big-block Chevelles.
8. This gas tank vapor breather is used only on ’69 Chevelle models; this one still needs the proper spring clamps installed. The Spring Clamps have now been remedied
9. Both front calipers are the correct, single-piston style, but lack proper casting #s and dates. All new hoses and hardware have been installed adding nice detail to the assemblies.
10. Close-up of front driver’s side suspension/brakes details. The rotor dust shield is a reproduction and finished incorrectly with the silver cadmium; originals were galvanized.
11. Ditto, passenger side.

DRIVETRAIN – EVALUATION

The engine block, although replaced during restoration, seams to be a correct appearing piece, as evidenced by the casting numbers and dates as well as the stampings found on the forward passenger side of the block. The transmission (a very rare HD three-speed manual) has also been replaced with another that is correct in style, casting #s, and finish. The rearend could likely be the original; it was in the car prior to restoration, and the dates and codes match up with the appropriate time frame for the build date of the car. Like the rest of the drivetrain, it was fully rebuilt to original specs.

1. Lots to look at here, and its all good. This shot gives you a very thorough indication of the meticulous workmanship lavished on the underside of this Chevelle. The chambered exhaust may seem “late” for the ‘69s (they were deemed too noisy, and recalled by GM late in ’69), but remember this was a Canadian built car and may not have had to concur with “US-built” directives. Plus, conversation with the original owner confirmed the chambered installation, plus the use of ”rolled” exhaust tips. Again, attributed to a Canadian anomaly.
2. The driveshaft is pretty, but it’s a prime example of an “over-restored” component; factory shafts were bare steel, but never “polished” to this degree. The shaft’s stripes are correct for the 396/manual transmission application. This shot also affords another look at the well-done floorpans and underbody.
3. Up front, the craftsmanship and detailing continues with the same fastidious commitment to quality. The front crossmember, usually the victim of innumerable floorjack assaults over the years, has been carefully massaged back into “just stamped” condition. The scrutinizing eye will also notice the correct speedo cable routing, the “correct” reproduction oil filter, gray spiral shocks, an undented oil pan, proper iron-nosed (stick shift) starter, and a correct floor-shift, manual transmission crossmember. Finally, notice the slight, factory-like overspray on the underside of the floorpans.
4. Another good look at the over-restored driveshaft as well as the Gardner Chambered exhaust, with the correctly positioned front clamps and proper rear muffler hangers. Correct white seam sealer is used around the floor plugs.
5. Further back we see the rest of the Gardner Chambered exhaust, including the correct “bullet” resonators and tail pipe hangers. Attention to detail carries over to the gas tank, which was properly stenciled by the restorer. Spiral rear shocks carry correct “AW” code tags.
6. Hard-to-find three-speed floor shifter is properly restored and mated to the correct transmission crossmember. Parking brake hardware and installation is also correct.
7. Although the HD three-speed manual transmission was standard for all SS396 Chevelles, it was not the most popular choice, for obvious reasons. That oddity makes it a rare find today, and this transmission was snatched from a donor car to complete the proper drivetrain componentry. The metal tag denotes its HD, full-synchro status; stampings to lower rear decipher thus: H=Muncie HD 3spd; 9=model year 1969; R=Assy date, Oct; 23=day of month; B=first gear ratio: 2.42:1 close ratio.
8. Correct stripes for a 396/manual trans driveshaft. Stripes assisted parts pickers in choosing correct components for particular applications.
9. The backdrive linkage for the locking steering column is correctly installed and functional. The linkage from the transmission to frame-mounted pivot is unique to the three-speed application, and very difficult to find.
10. Through #13 All are shots of wheel codes (YA) and date stamps. 3=month, March; 9=year, 1969. All good dates, except #12, which showed no wheel code or date stamp. Trim rings are nice reproductions.
14. Nice to see the correct reproduction tires used here, rather than the prolific (and incorrect) “Polyglas” Goodyears. The size is correct, as are the sidewall markings.
15. Correct spare tire &rim. Wheel has correct black “blow through” on backside from painting the outer wheel inserts.
16. Center cap is genuine GM replacement part, but a “late” version; the center of cap is ~1/8-inch “shallower” than originals. The “SS” foil insert is a correct GM piece. The lug nuts are reproductions of the original stainless “capped” pieces, and appear to be very close to original in appearance.
17. The “rolled” exhaust tips were originally installed on this Canadian constricted car (verified by original owner), although US-built Chevelles discontinued their use in late ’69. One can only assume they were used in Canada until the current stock was depleted. Finding these today can be a formidable task, and an expensive one. These originals were re-plated to better-than-new appearance at time of restoration.

ENGINE - EVALUATION

The original engine in this Chevelle was not present when the car was acquired, necessitating that a correct replace be located, rebuilt, and installed. Consequently, the stampings on the front engine pad are for another Chevelle, although the Tonawanda build date and engine suffix fall within the parameters correct for this car and its horsepower rating. The engine has been painted and detailed correctly, including the hard-to-find manual transmission-style air cleaner and the AIR emissions system. Correct hardware (style and markings) is used extensively to complete a well-finished engine compartment.

1. Overall engine view from driver side of engine compartment. Correct brackets, hardware and component finishes are evident.
2. Same view, from passenger side.
3. Correct fuel pump is installed, using proper hoses and original-style spring clamps. Colors of clamps are also correct.
4. Engine mounts are correct replacement “locking tab” style, although assembly-line mounts included a captured nut for the mount’s through bolt.
5. Too much flash and somewhat out of focus, but you can still read the correct “621” bellhousing casting #.
6. Correct appearing iron-snouted starter, used in manual transmission applications. It is not properly stamped for this application, and as you can see, the cast iron is beginning to show some discoloration from surface corrosion.
7. All new wiring harnesses were used in the Chevelle’s restoration, and this usually-missing starter harness retaining clamp illustrates how committed to quality the restoration was. Again, correct finishes on the fasteners is present, as the unpainted bolt and harness clamp were added after the bell housing was installed. All other bellhousing retaining bolts were painted. Details like this really do make a difference…
8. OK, I know it’s a battery topper, but it does give a “correct” appearance. At least when you give it only a perfunctory look. Reproduction batteries aren’t known for their long life or reliability, so this seems like a very viable answer to helping everything appear correct under the hood. Currently there is a New Battery in the car....the former reproduction battery failed.
9. The alternator has correct “843” stamping and dates that fit within the build parameters of the Chevelle. Rated at the correct 37A, it has been properly restored, and installed with the correct platings, hardware and brackets, although the “CW” code stamp was not found.
10. Several things to note here. The AIR smog tube is correctly plated with a “greenish” tinge; the plug wires have correct gray plug ends; the upper control arm retaining hardware is the correct cup and bolt, the head bolts have correct “cross” markings; the steering shaft is finished correctly and is correct for BBC applications; and finally, the (hard-to-find) single groove pulley is correct for non-PS applications.
11. Valve cover retaining bolts w/correct “TR” head markings. Although not visible here, valve cover gaskets are correct “silver” coated items.
12. Brake booster is an original unit, sourced from a nice California core, the properly plated and restored.
13. Master cylinder is an original that has been properly restored (black painted and natural cast finish are both acceptable), and features the proper “BA” stamping on front, machined pad.
14. Closed air cleaner required a special rubber hose and tube from valve cover to air cleaner. Because of relative rarity of 325-horse engines, they are difficult to locate. Also notice correct white stripe hose and retaining clip for vacuum advance, and the “S” stamped oil filler cap on the non-dripper valve covers found on 325-horse engines. Choke hardware and platings are correct.
15. The 7029201 ED carb is correct for this application, although the date indicates a Julian date of the 76th day of 1971 (first 3 digits indicate day of year, last digit indicates the year of decade). Service replacement carb, perhaps?
16. Correct side-inlet carb configuration, plus proper routing of hoses and connections.
17. The 3931067 intake casting # is correct for this application.
18. Casting date appears to be A 6 9 (January 6, 1969), which is within the date parameters for this Chevelle.
19. Radiator uses original Harrison tanks, but has been re-cored using incorrect (current) high efficiency core. The fins are closer together resulting in more efficiency, but an incorrect appearance. Nobody but a ’69 Chevelle fanatic would likely notice.
20. The clutch fan is the correct “772” version, and the date stamp of late ’68 is within the build date parameters for this Chevelle.
21. Plug wires are correct reproductions, and they are dated 1 Q 69 (1stquarter 1969); correct for this car.
22. Radiator cap is incorrect, stainless replacement. Original would have had big “ears” non-stainless construction, and the fonts are different on the stampings and embossed areas.

INTERIOR – EVALUATION

Restoring the interior of a “300” series SS396 presents a special challenge because of the many unique trim pieces that comprise the package. Unlike the Malibu-based SS396, that has several different companies reproducing interior trim pieces for it, the “300” never enjoyed the same high volume of factory production, and subsequently the aftermarket has chosen to largely ignore that particular segment. There is one company, however (SMS in Canby, Oregon), that has been willing to produce seat covers and door panels on a one-by-one basis to help satisfy the demand. As one might expect, this is a very costly proposition, as well as having an extended production timeline. So for a proper interior restoration, one must be willing to pay more and wait longer for what might otherwise be some fairly common restoration parts. The rubber floor covering is unique as well, and the reproductions aren’t even close to being properly configured. The only alternative is to try to locate a good, used original floor covering, and use it. That is what has been done here, although the floor covering originally was installed in a station wagon. Virtually the same, the wagon mat required a slight trimming to make it work in the sedan, but the finished result is virtually indiscernible from stock. There are also a few other reproduction parts used in the interior, but nothing that would detract heavily from the overall quality of restoration.

1. The interior appears pristine, despite the difficulty of having to order door panels and seat coverings from small company (SMS Interiors) that offers individual order service, rather than off-the-shelf soft trim from the “big boys.”
2. The rear seat shows off the unique “basket weave” insert pattern, and the white stripes that are specific only to the “300” series.
3. The rubber floor covering is unique to the “300” series, and very difficult to find in good condition. The shifter bezel is a reproduction, as is the shifter boot. They’re nice, but fall a bit short of originals. The shifter handle is very specific to the three-speed, bench seat application. Note three-speed pattern on hard-to-find shifter ball, too!
4. The SS396 bezel installed above the glove box door is the same as all other ‘69 SS396 models.
5. Repro steering wheel is nice; the shroud is incorrect, however, with the ’70 grain appearance rather than the correct ’69 “pebble” look.
6. Beautiful “300 Deluxe” door panels were recreated by SMS.
7. Close-up view of driver side floor covering, including the integral reinforced area. Also notice the nice installation of the firewall insulation pad, the plastic steering column plate, and the heater outlet.
