1971 cutlass S 4spd convert
Could use some help. I have my best friend interested in a car another very good friend has. Its a 71 4 spd convert. Some brownish metallic (sierra?) with a copper looking interior. Frame is done, new lines, etc. Engine rebuilt and done. body is in primer. No interior.
Has its original 4spd. Also has some heads on it that supposidly match what a W31 would have. Is this car fairly rare? Is there something I should look for to help them do a good informed deal? I dont want either guy to get burned, neither knows enough, so want both side to be informed. I am clueless on olds like this. The one friend has 8500 in it, so its within a price range my other friend can afford, get a $6K paint job, do the interior for 3K, top for 1K, and get pretty close to a nice car for 20K. Colors may be pretty cool and rare (he said the sierra brown metallic was rare). How that looks with the copper interior, not sure. One wants it gone, the other wants it because its a 4spd convert. He would put the W30 hood on it, likely pushing him past 20K for sure. bob |

Re: 1971 cutlass S 4spd convert
I assume its a 350 engine if you refer to a W31. Its a nice car and the colors were common for 1971. Although they kook good when fresh its not a real desirable color combo.A 350 4 speed has low production numbers but not sure what they are. It sounds like a nice driver quality car that your friend can enjoy with not a lot of money tied up. Without photos I cannot asses the car or its worth, only to say the numbers cannot be far off. If the engine is still original and it has an original carb the carb number will confirm if its an original 4 speed application, number should be 7041253.

Re: 1971 cutlass S 4spd convert
To clarify, it's a Cutlass Supreme, not a Cutlass S.
I have production numbers of 4-speeds from the GM Heritage Center, but for all CSs and not just the ragtop. All of them were 350s - no 455s had the 4-speed: The CS is the 4200 series, right? So that would be 692 M20 cars built. The Cutlass SX was auto-only, so is a 350 4-speed more interesting than a 455 auto? The former is prob rarer than the latter, which is already rare. Certainly a good find! |

Re: 1971 cutlass S 4spd convert
thanks for the help guys. My one buddy is not digging the root beer brown, he wants to see a sample of the color in person. Overall he is thinking the color combo is not great, but the 4 spd is keeping the interest alive.

Re: 1971 cutlass S 4spd convert
It sounds like the color you are referring to is Sienna Brown, which was a one year only color for Olds, code 67 and the similar interior color was also Sienna.

Re: 1971 cutlass S 4spd convert
It could also be what Pontiac called Castilian Bronze, although I don't recall what Olds called it.
Brown is in the eye of the beholder - sometimes "bronze" adjusts the paradigm a bit and makes it more palatable. |
