Default 1970.5 Camaro ID

Buddy is going to sell a roller in the next couple of weeks, 1970.5 Camaro.

Automatic car. All the parts are gone, not the original rear end. Van Nuys car. Tach redline is 6500, yellow starts before.

Any advice on what to look for to figure out if it could be a Z/28 or it's just an RS? Here are pics. He said the nose looks like it's been replaced. I also asked him for a better trim tag pic.

Here's what I got so far:

Vanuys 1970 camaros usually have the build sheet above the fuel tank drivers side. Also in the front seat covers usually passenger side seat. You mentioned the tachometer is a 6500 red line. Thats a L78 tachometer. If the tachometer is original to the car it may be a L78 camaro. I will message you my phone number. Give me a call and I can help you with more details?

First tell tale sign is a floor mounted gas pedal.

My buddy and I talked about the gas pedal, those things can be swapped out. I'll see if I can go check the car out myself and take some pics.

Also look for welded on rear sway bar brackets on the rear frame rails. It being a original automatic body rules out L78. At the present time there have not been any automatic 70 L78 camaros proven made. As you mentioned. Parts are easily swapped. I would go for a build sheet. if the tank was never removed. It should be there.

Original tank is gone. If there is a build seat in the passenger seat would it just be tucked in there? I'll ask him to check. He said auto car so we figured not an L78.

The Z28 floor mounted gas pedal can be swapped out, but would leave the two 1/4" holes for the ball studs in the toe-board. Also, look for evidence of holes in the lower rear tail panel for the rear bumper fang mounts. Combined with the rear sway bar frame mounts and aluminum blocks under the LCA bumpers, it could give an indication of what the car might have been. Unfortunately, with the original driveline gone, no build sheet and being an LA car, there's just no smoking gun to ID what it was originally.

If there's a chance the seats are original. I know of 2 1970 vanuys camaros with build sheets found in the upper passenger side seat upper back. They were front side between the padding and seat cover. One is a 70 L78 I personally own. And another posted on a forum and discussed. Hopefully maybe one is there. Just make sure if readable the vin matches the car upper right hand corner if you find one.
