Went to Las Vegas for the first time in 1986. We (my business partner) got there around 5PM. Told him I was tired and wanted to lay down - he said he would see me later. I woke up at around 8PM and looked out of the window of my hotel room. We were there for a conference. All I kept thinking was . . .

I want to be the GE lightbulb salesman for this territory.

I was looking back at some older posts and came across one for Crane & Co. They have been making the paper for US currency since 1775. The company was established in 1770 by Stephan Crane to sell paper.

That's a very old company. But it is the oldest in the USA? Nope - not even close. That honor goes to Kenyon's Grist Mill, RI established in 1696.

NOTE: I excluded farms, restaurants, taverns and hotels. Had to be a company that manufactured goods for sale.

Did you read comic books when you were a kid? Did you wish you had super powers? X-Ray Vision, the ability to fly, super speed, super strength?

Humans don't have super powers - at least not like portrayed in comic books. But in Nature, there are organisms that truly have them as you will see.

Humans have 3 color receptors in our eyes (Red, Green & Blue). The Mantis Shrimp has 16! Not only can they see trillions of colors (humans - about 1 million) but they can see in both the Infared Red and Ultraviolet spectrums. It is speculated they can actually see radar waves, the same way we see heat waves. Super Vision is their super power.

In the arms race Nature has a way of evening out the odds between predator and prey. This Pistol Shrimp is both. They are fearsome predators. That oversized claw is their weapon.

This large claw holds the pistol shrimp’s superpower. When a pistol shrimp senses prey is nearby, it will open the top part of its big claw, allowing some water to enter a small chamber in the crook of the claw. Then, when it clamps down, the pressure from a small plunger on the top claw forces the water out of the chamber. This happens so fast that it creates bubbles. And not just any bubbles: these bubbles can speed out at 60 miles per hour, fast enough to stun or kill the prey! When the bubbles pop, it makes a “snap” sound that gives these shrimp their name.

The bubbles are loud. Like, really loud. The snap of one recently-discovered species of pistol shrimp called Synalpheus pinkfloydi (named after something else that is also loud and very cool: Pink Floyd) can reach 210 decibels. That is louder than an actual gunshot, which is around 140 – 175 decibels.

Would you consider immorality a super power? If you do then this animal has it. The Turritopsis Jellyfish. When it gets old or injured it dives to the sea floor, and there it will fold in upon itself. Essentially, it reverts back to its “polyp” stage, or its baby-form, and begins life anew.
