Mill top surface of block after sleeving
UH OH.. We have a 1971 LT1 that sat in the car for 20 years, someone had pulled the intake off and apparently some water got into a few of the cylinders and pitted them Real Bad, we were told that 3 of the cylinders will have to be sleeved which by itself is not a problem, The problem is the engine stamps on the front of the block. I am worried that when they mill the top of the sleeves and the top of the block the VIN and engine ID stamp will be milled off. Has anyone ever had a block sleeved and milled without touching the stamps?

Most machine shops can do that without taking off the numbers. I know my guy asks me on every block I get decked if I want him to save the numbers. I never do (just don't take those blocks) so I can't say what it looks like when they do that.

Some machinists will use the boring bar to cut down the top of the sleeve flush with the deck surface instead of decking the block.

My brother had a LS6 block decked and they stopped the machine just before it got to the numbers.

The decks and the other bores around the sleeves are all warped when the sleeves are put in. The deck needs to be machined and all the other cylinders need to be bored out further. As for saving the numbers, yes it can be done. It usually involves sitting the block sideways on the machine so that the cutter runs across the deck rather than lengthwise. The machinist will center the block so that the number pad doesn't go over the cutter.

Thanks for the info, this is definitely good news. He was worried that we would have to bore the engine 080 to clean the cylinders up.
