Default 1966 Chevelle

This may be a very stupid question ,..... Are all BB Chevelles in 1966 SS cars ? Could you get a BB 396/360hp engine in 1966 without the car being an SS ? Thx Bob

Not sure about Chevelles but, I seem to recall seeing El Caminos with the 396 and they weren't Super Sports.

In this page from chevelles dot com a Chevy Punch article has a copy of a 1965 brochure (for 1966) that only lists the 396 available in the SS. It is common knowledge that this motor also came in the ElCamino as it did in 1967 also. The SS396 ElCamino did not appear until 1968.

Do as they did, not as they say.

Canada could get a Malibu SS with a 396.Sounds kinda redundant, but I think they are Different.

The way I remember it - The option was SS396 - not SS. It was not available any other way.
My book shows 66,843 SS Coupes & 5,429 SS Convertibles - totaling 72,272 cars.
With a total 396 production of 75,245 - making the non SS 396 pretty rare!

Canadian Malibu SS was available with a 396. Still Badged as a Malibu SS. Oshawa Built only. Very rare Cars. Check Canadian Classics and Beamonts web site. There is also a Guy on Team Chevelle who owns one, goes by the name 67supersport.

Yes, All BB Chevelles in 66 were SS
You could not get a BB in a Chevelle without the car being a SS. The VIN on all factory BB cars should begin with 138.
You cannot get a 396/360 on a car without it being a factory SS car.

They must all be El Caminos? Any 66/67 wagons ever seen with the 396 from factory?
