Default 1965 396-425HP corvette Z16 engine

This is an original 1965 396 4bolt block casting number 3855962 with a date code of E-23-5 and front pad of T0712IF with vin number still intact. This is authentic and I guarantee this not to be a restamped block. The block has been cleaned, magged and pressure tested and will remain standard bore and ready to drop the original pistons back in it that I have as well as the original rods. I have the steel 6223 crank already installed back in the engine and it is standard as well. The motor will come with the original square port heads casting number 3856208 dated E-22-5 and the original intake casting number 3866963 dated 5-18-65 as well as the original waterpump casting number 3856284 dated F-16-5. I have the original high volume oil pump as well for the motor. The heads have been cleaned up and pressure tested after minor repairs and will need resurfaced, valve job and guides installed. These parts are in great overall condition and the block is as virgin as you will ever find. $12,500 for this set up and serious inquires only by phone 330-638-0511 or 330-770-2517 after 11am. I have access to the original exhaust manifolds dated F-7-5 and the original distributor as well.

Dennis,
Not to be critical, but I believe the '65 Z-16 engine was rated at 375hp and had a hydraulic cam. The 425hp rating was available in the full sized passenger car though and was the same engine (other than the distributor) as the Corvette engine. Is the VIN on your block Corvette or Passenger?

This is the corvette coded 425HP 396 which was also availbable in the impala as well and had a IE code. The chevelle was a 375HP application for 1965 and carried to different codes.

dlv is correct on this one. 65 offered 396/425HP for Corvette as well as Chevelle.

Donut,,,Did you mean to say Chevy??? Z16s were not the same engine as Corvettes. Seems like we just went over this. Corvette style 396/425 motor was available in full size Chevy briefly at the end of the 65 sales year but had a different code from the Corvette motor.......Bill S

Bill,

I do not think that George is saying that the Z16 is the same engine as the Corvette....he is just saying that Chevrolet offered the 396/425 in the Corvette and the Chevelle....not the Z16 Chevelle.

Dan.

Bill, Dan is correct I was only acknowledging that dLV was correct about the 396/425hp offered in Corvette and Chevelle. (Period) Friend has a 65 Vette with this very original motor in it.

The heading of this post states 425hp & Z-16. That was what prompted my comment, merely meant to be a minor correction rather than the beginning of an argument.
According to Chevy's production figures there were only 201 396cid engines installed in production '65 model year Chevelles, and we all know they were rated at 375hp. Show me some proof that any Chevelle got a 425hp engine.
Two 396 engines entered production for '65 full sized passenger cars: The L-35 (325hp) with a total production of 55,454 and the L-78 (425hp) with a total production of 1,838 compared to Corvette production of 2,157.
Actually, there wasn't even an RPO# assigned to the 396 engine used in the Chevelle. Z-16 was an entire option package that included that engine, along with many other components, similar to the Z-06 or Z-11 ('63) packages.

Verne's correct...but on that last part, didn't GM label the Z16 engine the L37 although you couldn't order it without the whole Z16 package? .

-----Verne has gotten across what I was trying to say. There was no 396/425 motor factory installed in a 1965 Chevelle. Only 1965 Corvettes and a very few 1965 full size Chevys got the solid-lifter motor. The Z16 1965 Chevelle motors were 375 horsepower and had hydraulic cams although they appeared visually to be exactly the same as a 425HP. I hope my post didnt come across badly. Just stating the facts........Bill S
