Default Rally Wheel Color?

I just acquired a 1967 L78 Camaro and would like to know if the rally wheels are suppose to be painted body color or Argent Silver. As it stands now, the wheels are body color but I don't know if that's correct. I'm thinking that either way, the back of the wheels are painted black. Thank you.

The black is primer.

I painted the entire wheel with black primer, then just paint the front with argent silver. Some silver should "overspray" onto the backs. Pretty sure this is correct.

I had an original spare, and this is what it looked like.

I did the same thing Lynn on my wheels and believe that is correct too.

The original color was a silver, and may have been called "Argent Silver" back then, but it was a very different hue from the "Argent Silver" mix that is listed in the books now (or sold in a spray can). On my 67 ElCamino we matched an original 1967 spare tire that had never been on the ground (from a 39K mile car), and the "modern" Argent Silver mix was way off.

Also, at MCACN this year we rolled one of my wheels over to an outstanding restored 67 Camaro there that the restorer also matched to an original Camaro spare, and they were identical.

Terry Davis in Wytheville VA sells the correct mixed color by the quart. 276-620-9666

These are truck rallys at Flint Assembly circa 1979.

I would imagine Corvette rally's were done in a similar fashion.

The amount of overspray on the inside and rear would vary based on the individual operator.

Default Rally Wheel Silver paint

There were several GM makes/models that were built with different wheel colors depending on the cars lower body color and those cars used the (dog dish) standard cap.

My experience with the Silver paint used on the 65-67 GTO Rally Wheels over 45 years.

Back in the early 80’s we used Dupli-Color Argent Silver as it was a real close match.

Today the colors on anything need to be spot on like the Factory used.
Post #6 has great advice for the paint needed on the rally wheels.

Below is a set of ‘67 dated Pontiac Rally I wheels with Original Paint.
Someone had installed ‘65 center caps, but otherwise they are legit Survivors.

The term “Silver Textured” was used to describe this color.

You can see the silver overspray and how it landed on the inside of the rim from spraying just the front side.

Comparison of the 55 year old silver paint to wheels I painted 30 years ago.
I like the old Survivor look better.

Last photo is my Original spare in my ‘66. The backside is definitely a gloss black with a slight silver coming through the slots upon close inspection.

Actually, Corvette rallys were done a little different than that:

So - basically the same except:

a) Tilted at a 20 degree angle
b) In groups of five
c) Manually spun while spraying
