Legally drive it home
How do I go about buying a car (87-GNX) in another state (Michigan) and Legally drive it
home to (Pa.) I don’t want to have the car shipped. I would rather drive it the 1000 or so miles then worry the whole time between handing over the money and the time It arrived at home looking the way it was when I purchased the car. All I have to do is make a phone call to have it insured but I am not sure about the registration and paper work needed to drive the car. It would be a real bitch to have the car impounded in Ohio and receive a thousand dollars in fines. Thanks

Re: Legally drive it home
In NJ you can buy a temporary "drive away permit" good for 20 days from NJDMV. It is on the NJDMV website. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/cit_regis...emp_in_nj.html
See if Michigan has something similar. |

Re: Legally drive it home
You transfer your insurance over to the car you just bought and use the plates from the car you took
the insurance off of. You have 72 hours to use it that way. Thats the way I was told to do it from my Vt insurance company. |

Re: Legally drive it home
i used to buy and sell a lot of cars in illinois, i would go to dmv and request a temporary tag. the state that the vehicle is going to be titled in should be the state you get the tag from. this has been a few years but call the dmv in your state and they should be able to set you up. ive also borrowed dealer tags from a used car lot i used to work auctions with.
