This one only has a single boss on the drivers' side. So would this be a late 68 bell going by that, or could it still be a late 69 bell in your opinion Mike?
Makes no difference as I am going to use it anyways, but would really like to know how to pin down the year?

Theres no real way of factually knowing with 100% accuracy, it could be any year but the 8 Mold number would make me believe it was a later issue. There is a 403 on eBay that has the 8 mold number and the same 10/3 month dating as yours ebay # 153448554399. Yours is probably perfect dating for a 10E car. JMO.
I just looked at my bellhousing sheet and I have no 8 mold number 403 with the rh boss. |

So how do I read the Date? There is a 3 in the upper half of the circle with an "L"shaped line? In the bottom circle appears to be 3 large dots and one small dot. That is reading left to right if you orient the circle to have the 3 right side up.

Numbers are 1-12 for month and 1-5 dots for week, so your would be March / 3rd week. Don’t know about the small dot.

While on the topic of bell housings, a couple of questions those in the know might chime in with. When fogging the edges of the bell GM orange:
I have seen some people do the bell all around the flange including the lower section, but I cannot see that to be correct on the bottom side? I could see it being fogged just where it meets up with the block and upwards but thought I better ask to be sure. Thanks in advance for any factory paint advice on the bell.

Since the bell housing was on the engine when it left the engine assm plant, I would think the bolts had paint on them.
As to how much paint I would think would be determined by who was doing the painting at that first time These are my logic. Not sure about the last part...Joe

Bell bolts get painted as well as overspray on fork (not boot, it was off ) A lot of bellhousings had varying degrees of paint, I think typical was about 2"-3" but I think there have been examples of almost complete coverage on original cars, and Yes the lower inspection cover and bolts were painted also. Lower inspection cover is unique, it should have NO ears on it to clip on oil pan, and beading patterns are different than the current GM replacements.
Corvette Central makes a nice reproduction, they are exact. https://www.corvettecentral.com/c3-6...pection-532118 Last edited by rszmjt; 03-27-2020 at 02:44 AM. |
