Default Muncie m22 question

Just picked up a couple of muncie transmissions. This m22 has a asterisk like it was stamped wrong. Has anyone else seen this?

The C doesn’t look the one that was on my over counter exchange M22.

The other letters look very similar.

If you want I could find the pictures of mine?

looks like the asterisk was an "A"? or am I stating the obvious?
Is it a fine spline?

It's a fine spline. With the amount of dirt and crud on it I would be really surprised that someone other than gm stamped this case. I don't think it's a service replacement by the date but anything is possible.
