I was just talking with a guy where high bidder walked away and even had a bad CC so BAT didn’t get their 5%. He did get contact info of 2nd highest bidder and was able to work out a deal. Maybe that’s an option for you.
One other thing, I believe BAT will ban those that don’t follow through on purchase.

Thanks Crush. I reached out to BAT to let them know what was happening this morning, so I expect I will hear back later today. Hopefully, this doesn't turn out to be a huge waste of time.

That really sucks. What kind of moron bids on a classic car without having funds in hand?

I’ve had it happen on eBay a couple of times. Sucks, sorry to hear this Mark.

I haven’t dealt with JJ Best for years, but 20 years ago it seemed like they waited a couple days before flipping a coin to decide if the loan was approved or not. Hopefully he’s just waiting for them to decide his loan fate.

I had a buyer slow play me on BaT for my 67, first of all said he didn't expect to win so needed time to get the funds. I told him 3 days or I sell it to someone else. Then, he had the funds but wanted to inspect it before paying. I told him no. Finally, he acquiesced, paid me by wire, and drove overnight to get the car. In the end, it was OK. Some people just don't behave like most. He was a nervous buyer, not inherently a jerk. As much as work as it takes (I am a pretty intense person in business), I have learned to be patient to a greater extent before I lose my sh1t with people. It's a shame not everyone does business the right way, but maybe he will come through...

I kept BaT in the loop on the whole thing and they took my side all the way. Even offered to reach out to the buyer and remind him of his obligations to follow through. As quirky as BaT can be, my experiences selling and buying have been generally quite favorable.

Thanks for the supportive comments guys. I think he is a genuinely nice guy who bit off more than he can chew and didn’t think the process through. I heard from him today and he has been trying to get things in order. I’ve offered to refund him $400 to pay for brokerage and will hold the car for 3 months if he gives me a deposit. Ball is in his court now…

Very kind of you Mark.

Speaking of "didn't think I would win" type auctions, that has happened to me.... but I STILL didn't bid unless I had the cash. It usually just means I have to explain to Sherri why I am driving 3.5 hours (one way) to pick up something I paid $21 for; which I will be doing Friday morning when I leave the house at 3:30 a.m. I am such a dumbass. But, it is a cool Sun diagnostic machine (VAT 40) that semi matches my existing Sun machines. Its just cool.... and functional.
