Default Recommend a Scanner for my Dad's Car Pictures

Hi All - I'm on the pursuit to track some of my Dad's old cars. I have hundreds of pictures of them that I would like to scan them and then develop a website dedicated to the search.

Can any of you recommend a high quality scanner for my old pictures? Most of the pictures are 4" x 4". I want something relatively small (I don't need anything that can scan something larger than 11"x14".

Unrelated question: Many of the old pictures have a date in the margin. Is this the date the picture was taken or the date the picture was developed?

Thanks All!
Kevin

Thanks for the replies so far.

I should mention that I plan to use the images for some enlargements as well for physical prints.

I doubt any enthusiast cameras in the 70's had date stamping buit in. I'm betting the pics were dated with the printing (???)

That was the development date.

When buying scanners you will go for the more costly ones, quality cost (as always)

If you're going to print them you have to scan them to actual printsize at 360dpi for the optimum quality of the print. This means huge files. A lettersize image is around 35-40Mb.
To scan an small transparency or print the scanner has to enlarge to 600-1000% and to do that with quality result you'll need a good scanner, a semi-professional unit.

Epson V700 is a really good one, but the other below that is pretty good too. V500 & V600.
I have the V700 and it is top quality.
