Not just "a Ford", but more specifically a Ford Model T.
That may be the reason that we standardized on driving from the LH side of the vehicle - because that is where the steering wheel is on a Model T Ford. K

Since the DeLorean was virtually a primary character, the filmmakers wanted to get the audio just right for the motion of the gull-wing doors.
