Default Alt Fan Belt Choices - V Belt

What are all you guys running for V-belts these days for deep groove setups? I was running one of those repop belts from Heartbeat and it rolled over using deep groove pulleys. I'd like to find a high quality V-belt w/o the top cogs or undercut cogs. Tried the Dayco Top Cog last year and it didn't work well. Also tried one of the Napa's belts (horrible) and it spun and screamed bloody murder at 4000 rpm.

I need a high quality V belt for a small block that's running a DG crank, water pump and alt w/o air pump or power steering. The one that rolled was 44.5" long and I had a aftermarket top alt bracket in the Nova. If I put the stock top alt bracket on I'm sure it's going to be somewhere in the 43" to 44" length somewhere?

Anyone have a lead or two on a good quality belt and the length for minimal pulleys (Crank / Alt and Water Only) ???

Thanks in advance.

I've ran Gates belts for lots of years & had no problems, deep groove or not. Unless NAPA changed something, their belts are Gates...Joe

Joe,

The NAPA belts I tried are cogged on the bottom and are not very thick. They appeared to be made by Continental Belt and a buddy of mine also tried one and said they are junk...and he's a Napa dealer. They don't have much of a V to the underside and slip like you would believe. Tried two of them on my 68 with stock deep groove pulleys and it was painful.

Looking for an original style V-Belt and nothing cogged if I can help it?

Any chance there are alignment issues with the pulleys?, as that is what the symptoms suggest. I've run the repop belts from Quanta Products on two 70 Zs without issue...one w/ AIR and one w/o AIR.

Graeme,

Those are Gates belts. They changed them years ago in order to reduce the amount of SKU's. Have you thought of repro belts? They would be the correct width, depth, and angle.

Another vote for Quanta, I have ran my L78 and L79 cars to 6K redline many times without issue.

Default Alt Fan Belt Choices - V Belt

Graeme: I had an alternator belt issue years ago from NAPA. The belt flipped over, upside down in the groove. I asked a mechanic friend of mine concerning the belt. He asked me if I had re-tensioned the belt after initially running it. I said no, I didn't know it was needed. I purchased another same belt from NAPA, re-tensioned it after some minimal usage ( a few days), and never had a problem since. Try it! He also did not like the cogged belt on the V side, but said the Top Cog belts were good! Let me know how this works out for you. Don.

My pulleys are aligned correctly and I've only put about 150 miles on the new motor. Banged off a couple real quick gears before I put it away a couple weeks ago and it was after that when I noticed the Quanta belt had flipped over. I was using a Moroso long arm bracket on the right side and that had it using a 44.5" Quanta belt and maybe stabbing two gears caused it to flex before it rolled over? It's the only thing I can think of but it destroyed that belt pretty quick.

I've tried just about every other brand I can find up here and sadly, very few make a true V belt now days including Gates, Dayco, Continental etc.

Hoping to find something better to try?

Could just be the picture but that water pump pulley looks off line. The outer edge looks like it lines up but the belt centerline looks off. I like to check centerline (with a laser) because pulleys always seem to vary in thickness.
