Default Yenko Z Drag Car

Hey guys,
I just got a cool picture given to me. The car pictured is a 1967 Camaro (has to be a Z-28)with dark paint(black and white photo) and white stripes, no spoiler (1967) and is running Super Stock "E", stick. The car is sponsored by "Yenko Sportscar Dealers" and appears to be doing a burnout at "Thunder Valley" Bristol Tenn.. The names posted on the door are Volpe, Pizzi, and Rose, the fender sticker appears to be the engine builder Tony Pizzi. Anyone ever hear of it?

Andrew

Andrew, I think I may have a picture of that car running against my Dad's Z-28 at Bristol. He held the AHRA E/stock record at Bristol for a few years and I remember seeing a Yenko or Motion sponsored 67-68 Camaro in one of my Dad's pictures. I will have him try and dig it out of the archives. Can you email or post the picture you have? Old drag cars are too cool! Especially ones with Yenko on them........RatPack..........

I will be more than happy to post the picture. I just have a printout photo right now. I will call the gentleman that gave me the printout and ask him to post it.

I found that picture in an old magazine about 20 years ago and posted it on a few web sites looking for info on it.

I got a reply on a drag racing site from a guy who knew Tony Pizzi. He didn't remember the 67 Z but remembered Tony's 68 Camaro 302 drag car.

He said it ran very well and Tony had more success with the 68

I think the 67 Z with the "Yenko Sportscar Dealers" sponsorship was part of the early 1967 Yenko Camaro program before Yenko teamed up with Dick Harrell and expanded the 67 drag racing program.

Not saying this is the case at all here, but there were a few cases where dealers/racers did not use an actual Z car. For a variety of reasons, they took what was available and made it look like a Z. Even in 1968, some dealers took drivetrain, doors and grill and taillights and made their 67 into a 68 !!

Some race cars were built from wrecked, or salvaged cars

I was told Tony's 68 was not a real Z

the Yenko/Thompson 67 road race car also with the Yenko Sportscar sponsorship was said to be built from a salvaged car

The 67 Z drag car with the "Yenko Sportscar Dealers" sponsorship may have been a real Z but don't know

The blue road race car was originally a 6-cylinder car Don bought at a dealer auction. It was prepared for Don to race by RST Engineering in MI.

The drag car with Yenko Sportscar Dealers on the quarter was a real '67 Z and was ordered/bought by Ollie Volpe.

I don't know any background on Tony Pizzi's white car.
