Default Gas tank cleanup

I have a 66 Chevelle original gas tank that I am trying to clean off what looks to be a combination of undercoating and possibly paint. Any ideas as to the best way to get this crud off? I really prefer to try to save the original tank rather than buying a reproduction. I have heard diesel fuel works? Thank you for any suggestions.

Diesel fuel works well, graffiti remover is good as well. I used Go Jo hand cleaner along with a steam cleaner to get mine where I wanted it.

Thanks for the help. If my tank comes out half as good I will be quite happy!
