The Energy Information Administration reckons that of the total worldwide energy consumption in 2012 of 529 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), the United States gobbled up 18 percent. Keep in mind the United States supports about 320 million people — just 4.4 percent of the world's population of about 7.2 billion.
