Default Clutch Chatter

I have a friend that has a 69 396 Chevelle with a 4 speed that has bad clutch chatter. So I replaced clutch and pressure plate and had the flywheel resurfaced. Still had chatter so I replaced flywheel still has chatter and I also replaced motor mounts. I replaced pilot bushing each time. Anyone ever encountered this?

I am thinking if the trans mount and or if the crossmember were loose could contribute to the condition you are experiencing.

I have had similar problem.....after numerous and multiple attempts with much frustration ....all my problems went away when I replaced my none GM flywheel with new GM flywheel.

Every scenario is different.

Good luck,

Dan

If the bellhousing is not in absolute perfect alignment -- clutch chatter may result. If push gets to shove ... change the bellhousing. TAZ

Had the same problem with a 69 Chevelle I owned.
The new owner bought it knowing that it had clutch chatter, then chased the problem in a similar fashion as you.
One thing that helped was to replace all the rear control arm bushings.
Not sure if anything else was done after that.

What clutch disc are you using?

Also, you may need to center up the bellhousing with offset dowl pins. It can be time consuming but well worth the effort.

It's my understanding that the problem was resolved and has not reoccurred but I'm sure Bill could update us if anything has changed.
