Default VIN Location ?

From the baltimore plant can the VIN be stamped on the block in either the front pad or down by the oil filter?
I ask because a friend rescently purchased a 69 chevelle SS 396 and his vin is located opposite of my car. Both cars 69 chevelle's built at the baltimore plant. Was this possible or did this plant only stamp the numbers in one location only?(Top pad or filter area)
Thanks for any help

Welcome.
Both examples were possible & have been documented.Usually the earlier built were by the Oil filter, but not always as humans stamped these,so they were sporadic.
Tell us more about the cars.

It's typical of what I have observed & sounds in line.

Not taking anything away from either of these cars, but a VIN# by the OIL filter is considered more convincing once looked at closely,as it has a rough cast surface that is nearly impossible to duplicate,if at all.
The broach marks & Stampings in the Pad behind the alternator, can be recreated to look authentic by decieving people.

Thanks MR70 for the info. I never paid much attention to the numbers thing in the past but whene my buddy had things in different areas it peaked my interest to find out how GM did things and if there were any consistencies. What i have learned from this site as well as others on similar topics is there is no rhym or reason to it. I think the Calif. plant was the only plant to stamp stricktly on the upper pad.
