Third class communal spaces had a simple, elegant feel. For example this smoking room included wooden benches and chairs, plus a titled floor. It's likely this image is from the Olympic.

The idea of finding the ship was first raised in 1914. But it wasn't until July 1986 that Robert Ballard (pictured center with survivors Eva Hart and Bertram Dean) discovered the wreckage of the ship. He and his team had been photographing US submarines on a secret Cold War mission, and were allowed to search for the Titanic as a side project after the main job was done.

Launched in 1938, the Graf Zeppelin was Nazi Germany's only aircraft carrier. At the end of WWII, the Soviet Union took control of the ship and used it for target practice.

During the WWII Battle of Guadalcanal, the USS Juneau was sunk by a Japanese torpedo off the Solomon Islands, taking 687 people with it. Among the dead were the Sullivan Brothers -- five brothers from Iowa who fought together in the war. The Juneau was discovered in 2018 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen using his research vessel, the Petrel.

Probably only worth $243,000 as soon as you drive off the lot.

Back in 1940, Henry Ford predicted a mass market flying car would be inevitable, but the concept has never got off the ground, and every attempt to invent a viable model has fallen flat and ended in failure.

If parallel parking is your nemesis, you may be a little disappointed the five-wheel self-parking car never made it past prototype stage. The vehicle was developed by designer Brooks Walker in the early 1950s on behalf of Cadillac.

A series of hydraulic pumps and gears would push out the fifth wheel from the rear, so the driver could rotate the back of the car and glide into the space with ease. Cadillac shelved the project but Walker carried on designing parallel parking systems into the late 1970s.
