14 x 7 Steel wheels
A guy I know has (3) 14 x 7 steel wheels 5 x 4 3/4 bp with the following stamps:
K18 8 XI Based on what I've seen this decodes to Kelsey Hayes Romulus Plant August of 1968? I can't find any info on an XI code steel wheel so I'm wondering if these are XT wheels where the top of the "T" didn't stamp strong? Guy said he got them (loose) with an LS-6 Chevelle he bought years ago. Two of the wheels have Daytona Yellow paint on them and the other has Ralley Green paint. He got 4 with the car but can't find that 4th one at the moment. Thinking about buying them but would like some input from this Community. Anyone know of an XI code steelie? Opinions/thoughts?

I saw four XI wheels with tires and dog dishes at the Peotone swap meet maybe 15 years ago and wasn't sure about them either. The wheels were painted white. I kicked myself after I got home and looked in Chevrolet By The Numbers and found there was no XI wheel listing. My opinion.... they are XT's with a sloppy stamping. At the time, I was carrying a wheel measuring caliper so I was absolutely sure they were 14 X 7. Live and learn.

Well, I bought 'em.....
Bought these wheels this weekend. Once I got them home and cleaned up, no doubt they are XT's. Wish he could find the other one. He told me if he finds it, he'll sell it to me. Here's some pics...you can faintly see the top of the "T" on 2 of the wheels, I can't on the other one. While we're talking about these wheels, I see what looks like the original paint on both sides of the wheel as well as around the circumference. My question is when these were painted by the factory, did they apply full coverage everywhere or just the surface facing out?

Wheel Painting: The wheels were removed from the prime conveyor and placed in another conveyor system that took them through a booth where their faces were sprayed with color wheel enamel, then through an oven, and the conveyor continued to the wheel & tire assembly area where the wheels were picked off. |

Thanks William! Any idea what color primer was used?

Both referenced articles were contributed by CRG Core Member John Hinckley. John spent much of his professional career at Chevrolet in Engineering and Manufacturing dating back to the late '60s. He was actually there!
We are incredibly fortunate to have him on the team. |
