I was kinda thinkin the same thing. Not something that was very common in 59. And this guy don't look like no beatnik (predecessor to the hippie). Interesting. Maybe an offshoot of playboy.

really? I've heard of them but never saw one!!


contrary to popular belief, George Harrison was NOT the first user of these pipes in the USA. If you pan through all those old ads on the other thread where this photo came from you may see some things you wouldn't post here!

That "gold thing" is a Hookah, used for smoking tobbaco in nearly every Arab country in the world. Why he would be even aware of such a thing, unless he was a Syrian or Lebonese guy that just moved to Detroit, is the mysterious thing. It's just a water pipe, and pretty much anything you could smoke could be smoked in it.
