The Dead Sea, a saltwater lake surrounded by Israel, Jordan, and Palestine, is located 429 metres (1,407 feet) below sea level. It’s the lowest point on Earth and its water level is shrinking by 1.5 metres (5 feet) per year.

Russia spans 11 time zones. When it’s 9 a.m. in Moscow, it’s 8 p.m. in Siberia. Some countries with territories on several continents have a similar span. But Russia is the only country on Earth that has this particular situation over one continuous territory.

The continent of Antarctica holds 90 per cent of the world’s fresh water reserves. If global warming melts the Antarctic ice sheets, the level of the oceans could rise by 70 metres (230 feet) all around the world. But before that happened, all human life on Earth would have disappeared. For the ice sheet to completely melt, there would have to be a 10-degree Celsius (18-degree Fahrenheit) rise in the global temperature, which would be fatal for humans.
