Default Welding Muncie handle to Hurst shifter????

Hi everyone,

Just bought a '67 Camaro real 4K L78 car. Already hate the Muncie shifter as it is now bound up in reverse. Fortunately, I was able to back into my garage and I'll have to get under this weekend and get it unlocked.

Plan is to order a Hurst Competition Plus shifter and linkage kit (pretty spendy over $700) and then cut the shifter handle off and weld the Muncie stick to it as I am a purist and want to maintain the stock look.

Seems straightforward enough. Any concerns guys or tips?

Thanks,

Paul

I am pretty sure you can purchase a reproduction Muncie handle that is already made to fit the Hurst shifter mechanism. You won't ruin your original handle and is less expensive then rechroming the one you cut and weld. They make them for the Chevelle so likely made for the Camaro as well.

Rick, do you know where to get one of these? I’d like to do this same conversion to a 69 nova

Thanks

Post Muncie/Hurst...

I have done this conversion for a few shifters...pretty simple. Weld the Hurst end on the Muncie handle...once it is in the boot, you can't tell. As for not ruining a Muncie handle, they make a number of aftermarket pieces that will work. For the Nova, the Chevelle handle is close...the average car guy won't know the difference.

A 67 Camaro factory handle can be cut off & drilled to match the Hurst shifter stub, unless you want to save it, like Rick said they may make a handle now. Hurst pricing has got stupid in last few yrs.

This is what I did (cut and drilled) with my shifter and it was pretty easy.

I did the same thing with mine, but it's harden steel. I used a high speed drill bit for the holes. It will sit a little higher than stock, but you'll be the only one that knows it.

I don't know if you know this, but the Hurst after market shifter for the 1967-68 and the 1969 Camaro's, all the installation kit are based off the small block location...

The shifter mounting plates don't take into account the motor and trans being moved 1/2" forward and 1/2" to the right for the big block application...

Some people say there isn't a problem, then there are the people that call me for this very problem...

If you have a problem I have a mount that addresses this very problem for both the 1967-68 and the 1969 big block Camaro's for both the 27 spline and 32 spline tail housings

Hope this helps... Crash

Paul, I am in the exact same situation. Finding it Difficult on taking the Death=Wheel to my Org "MUNCIE" chrom plated handle.

I bought the Plated version of the 67/68 shifter then ordered a 3/8UNC 'chrome' ball.

Also picked up: Hardened Bushing and properly sized New Clips
Source 5SPEEDS.COM

I am not positive they are Making a "F" Body Handle yet, I might have not looked hard enough tho.

Anybody got the Source and Part number for this Muncie Logo Hurst handle? (I have see Chevelle Handles of this description from the ("Parts Place")

Jim
