Love the period-correct tach. I'd have to ditch the fender skirts, just not my thing. It's a beauty and glad to see there's no tissue dispenser below the dash.

I don't know when that tach hit the market, or if it could be ordered through Chevrolet in 1960. It is what was in my Dad's 60, however he added it after he bought the car in 1962.

He terrorized the streets in that car for awhile with the factory hi-horse 348 3x2 and T-10 4-speed. Then it got a little upgrade in the fall of 63 with a near new 63 409/425 2x4, the new-for-1963 Muncie trans, and a 63 4.56 posi pumpkin. One of his friends had bought a new 63 SS with that drivetrain, but he quickly got tired of having to adjust the valves, and his wife couldn't stand to drive it since it "ran too rough". So he told Dad he could have the whole drivetrain if he would do a complete swap with the drivetrain from the 60. Sweet deal!

When going to the drag strip or to a pre-arranged street battle, the 4.56 pumpkin would be swapped out for another pumpkin that had 5-something aftermarket gears, and of course bye-bye to the skirts, and swap to another set of rear tires. There is an 8-mm film of the car at the drag strip with several people sitting on the tailfins on each side at the tree to help get more traction. Upon launch they all just slide right off the back and land on their feet and walk away! Now those were the days!

If it is the car I think it is, it is not real. Looks Like a car from here in NJ that had a heart transplant.

Default 1960 Impala Tach

Jeff, the tach on this car is just a period correct unit, RC8.5. The factory unit is an RC6. It did use the EB9A sender. Has the round football on the face. Became available sometime in April of 1960. It was NOT part of the engine option. My 60 350HP FH car has the tach in it, and I also have an NOS one in the GM/SUN box with the 7 digit GM P/N on it. I'll get it out of the display cabinet this weekend and take some pics. here is the one installed in my car.

Great spot for a tach on that 60! I always thought it would be cool to fab up a 63 tach in that spot on a 60, blended into the roll of the dash the way the 63 tachs fit!

That was my Mom's car. Factory red/white car, repainted solid in the early 60's. It had a 327 and 4-speed from a totaled 62 Impala. My Dad also had a red 55 (factory solid color car), and that is how they met, out cruising and stopped to talk since their cars matched. So I owe my very existence to two red 55's !
