The rules of NHRA Stock did not prevent women from racing so when Carol Cox showed up at Indy 1961 to race her Pontiac she was so outraged that NHRA denied her entrance, she went to the local press who pressured NHRA to "follow your own rules." Carol went down in history as the first woman ever to win an NHRA event.

The fastest time ever recorded by a magazine testing muscle cars was by Popular Hot Rodding. It tested a 1967 427 Stage III Nickey Camaro SS with slicks and a 4.88 rear. Best time: 11.30 @ 123 MPH.

Phil Bonner's Thunderbolt was originally set up to run in NASCAR. After seeing the car lap all contenders in Daytona 500 trials Bill France said "no way" so the car was given to Bonner to run NHRA Super Stock.

The first 50 Thunderbolts had fiberglass front bumpers and matching gravel pans. NHRA said "no more fiberglass parts - must be metal" so Ford used aluminum and retrofit them.

By February 1968 Ford's share of the performance car market had dropped to just 8%. Enter the 1968.5 428 CJ Mustang GT as the turn around car. By the end of the 1969 model year Ford's share was almost 20%.

The first Super Stock engine to be refactored by NHRA was the 1964 A990 Race Hemi. NHRA refactored Chrysler's advertised 425 HP up to 500 HP.

Originally the NHRA did not allow 1969 A12 Road Runners and Super Bees to compete in Stock. NHRA felt it was a Super Stock car. When Chrysler showed NHRA that they were selling thousands of them for the street NHRA refactored the 440+6's horsepower very close to the Street Hemi (450 HP) making the A12 uncompetitive.

Steve McQueen's character Frank Bullitt was modeled after a real San Francisco Police Inspector named Dave Toschi who became famous as the lead detective in the Zodiac Killer case

He also adopted Toschi's unusual (at the time) "upside down" quick draw shoulder holster for the movie
