Value of 1969 z/28
Came across a 1969 Camaro Z/28 RS that I was able to go see and decode today. I am going to try to best describe the car and see what the experts here can give me on a range for price.
Original Olympic Gold Paint with Black Vinyl Top Protecto Plate Car is a late December build 12D Car was a one owner until recently purhased. Flat hood no spoiler The car has the original drive train, engine, trans and rear end. Stampings all visible and all align with the build date of the car. All components appear to be correct and original..... based on dates I reviewed today. This includes carb, dist, alternator, radiator, master brake cylinder, starter, YH rims...the only thing that I don't think is original is the power brake booster. Car has headers but the exhaust manifolds and smog were all kept by the original owner. Interior is black standard and should clean up well. So basically a very original car. The weakness of the car is that it does have some rust in the usual places. Front fenders have some of the usual rust in the lower area down by the cowl. I believe these could be patched if one wanted to keep the original fenders. Rear quarters behind the rear wheel have rusted through and will require a patch or quarter replacement. Also looks like that one if not both of the trunk drops will need to be replaced. Trunk has some surface rust but no evidence of it being rusted through and is very solid. The car has the usual dents and scratches for a car of this age. Car also has some rust around the bottom inside of the front windshield and I believe the metal dash will need to be replaced. Seller sees the car as a survivor, however I see the car as very original and should be restored. Car has some rust as called out but overall very solid. Looking for some thoughts around pricing based on the information that I have provided. Thanks in advance for help that can be provided. Scott |
With the info provided I would say between $15,000 and $35,000. Start at $80k and work backwards to the WIW price. Are all the original parts there? I think the market is softening a bit for all but the best cars. Its going to be hard to get buyers and seller together for a while. I am helping someone sell a 69 Z/28 right now and I can see its not going to happen due to expectations.

Two very important items you didn't mention is whether the car runs and drive well and is it original paint or a repaint? Regardless, in this market I'd say at least $40K and up.

Thanks for the quick response. All number match on the driveline and I think all if not most of the components are original and have correct dates. Original paint car with some
rust in the lower front fenders and lover rear quarters behind the real wheel wells. Car has been parked since 1980 and does not run. RS Z/28. |
Depending on how bad the rust is I would say 35K.

Any attempt to 'patch' rust will destroy the cars' originality. Replacing the rusty dash top with the poor repro is always detectable and requires removing the VIN tag. Breeching the original installation can result in a state-assigned VIN label with corresponding decrease in value.
Best plan for this car is to re-install all the original components, clean it up and get it running. Do not ruin the car with a 'cowl' hood and spoilers. At a show, it will be the Z/28 with a crowd around it, admiring the originality. |

The buyer has a much higher thought around the value of the car. I was more in the 35K to 50K at the very most. Cat has 67K miles on it.

Sounds like it has Factory paint and born with Powertrain. Small rust, patina and just 53 years of aging is what I like to see. The last time I took my ‘66 GTO Survivor to a major car show was 12 years ago. Even back then I had a big crowd around this car asking questions and admiring the old Factory paint and original Powertrain. Every other car there was a repaint, repro interior and somewhat modified version under the hood = Dime-a-dozen. The Unrestored collectible automobiles are what most people are seeking ….. and they do draw a crowd. |

Looks like possibly a flipper picked up the car. A car matching the description to a T is for sale on a 1969 camaro Facebook page for a mere 100k. The usual photos of it still loaded on a flatbed and all.

Deck lid is rough as some container of chemical was set on it and has caused quite a bit of rust. Based on the pictures of the silver z/28 in this thread, this car is not even close to that condition. The flipper is trying to score big. I have seen the car and had it on a lift if anyone would like to know more as I am not a buyer at 110K

Thats a nice Orig car and I hate rusty cars, what ever it takes,
survivor rust repair and that car will be a show stopper. EDIT, I've had a good look at the photos and this is a nice car, A flipper got his hands on it but that does not take away from the car you just have to deal with well you know. I think thats a great Z28, a color thats out of the ordinary, like William says, no Cowl or Spoilers, Someones going to pay for it, I hope not what they're asking, but will have no regrets, Honest 69 Z28s are a pain to buy. |
Trans pic shows VIN which is hard to read. Is that 571666? That would match 12D build.
