Several ways, cut them off with a cut of wheel, crush them in a vise or burn them off. I then just glue on new knobs. I have gotten to the point that even though they are expensive I just replace the entire cable now as it is not worth the time and effort. Plus that 50 year old plastic is too brittle.

I think that’s what I am going to do. Thanks for the help!

Wire cutters, etc...the metal pull rod ends are somewhat barbed (you'll see that once you remove the knob). Check fitment on the new knobs......if you can't push them on all the way then you'll need to slightly drill them out and possibly use some epoxy glue over the end of the rod before you push on the repro knobs.

The problem with old cables is the plastic bushing that the small metal clip pushes against on the backside of the panel. These plastic bushing/sleeves tend to snap so be careful there when reinstalling the metal cable retention clips.
