correct paint on 1969 camaro rear end
 

The rear 12 bolt was painted with the drums on, so the drums are black. So the wheel cylinders and bolts are also painted black on the outer surface by the brake line.And the bleeders are black. Is this correct?I always bare steel paint the inner surface of the backing plates where the shoes go. Thanks John

That was exactly how I did mine as well. Next questions are; were the flexible and hard brake lines mounted on the rearend before paint? How about the E brake cables? Would these all have been painted black as well?

There are several vintage photos in period car magazines of t-bar installation, etc on 1st gen Camaros and in all with visible drums they are black and shiny. Hot Rod had a good photo of their '69 Z/28 test car getting bars for one.

Also John Z worked there and has stated axles were painted complete w/drums. The lines were not in place; the pinion flange was masked with a sleeve.

Think of the cast-blast you will save.

I thik Van cars were done diffrent, I have had some that the the drums were a med gray and show no signs of black.

Norwood & Van Nuys received axles from the same source; the Chevy Axle plant in Detroit.

Like master cylinders drums are castings that were painted after oily machining operations. The paint did not adhere for long.

I just dug out the May '69 Hot Rod; the photo is on p 53. The circumference of the drum is clearly black; the face seems to not be completely painted. There is slight overspray on the end of the axle flange.
