Valve Cover Install

Putting some nice black aluminum finned valve covers on the 304 V8 in my 74 CJ5 Jeep. Should I put RTV or some other sealant on both sides of the gasket ??

Thanks

Re: Valve Cover Install

Use a very fine layer of RTV on the gasket side which contacts the valve cover. This will help hold the gasket to the valve cover when installing.

The most important thing is to make sure the area where the gasket goes in the valve cover and the mating surface on the cylinder head are really clean for proper sealing.

I usually glue my cork gaskets to the valve covers then use a thin film of white lithium grease to keep it from sticking to the cast iron head.

Ditto on the grease...make sure the covers are clean and straight...use sealant to affix gaskets to the covers. Let them dry for awhile...I then use a light coat of wheel bearing grease on the surface that goes on the head...always works for me....don't over tighten!

You will like that trick next time you service the valve cover. Paul
