Dust Covers
 

??? What have you guy's been using for front spindle dust covers? I'm currently in the process of metal working the dings out of my "born with" set and have a repro set on order. I'm not sure how I feel about the bright Zinc finish on the new ones. I think it needs to be toned down some to be correct. Has anyone aged or refinished them ? I may stick with my old ones once they are straight, but I need a good back up.....Used set would be nice, but they are still going to need some work.

You can tone them down by giving them a very slight dusting in the bead blast cabinet. You could also remove the zinc finish altogether.

Great idea, My other thought was about 15 min in the tumbler...just not long enough to leave a pattern. Not sure why this bugs me, I'm the only one who will ever see it....

I just used a repop set on my Malibu I have been working on. I was doing plating anyway, so I striped off the bright zinc in phosphoric acid and had them cad plated. They are toned way down, not shiny at all.
I can shoot you a couple pic's if you want. There on the car.
Or, give them a quick dunk in the acid and rinse and inspect, repeat as need. That will dull them up a bit.
#3, strip the zinc, there will be a nice phosphoros coating on the steel, blow off with a air gun and a damp towell, force dry or hang in the sun ( you may have to go to AZ.) then treat with Rpm and leave the bare ?

Thanks Mike! I'm glad I'm not crazy in thinking these are incorrect as reproduced. I'll give it a shot and see how they turn out.

repops are not close to the nos ones - but do work.....nos ones and assembly like correct ones are bare steel.....nos ones, if u can find them are $$$ about 200 each if i recall.

big, if you do as mike suggest ref AZ.....i hang them outside my garage for you :-)

The nipple on the repops is too soft and too large and obviously the zinc in incorrect. Also I have found they usually do not fit for crap and will not hold so I have to put a series of dimples around the flange so they hold. Typical repop garbage.

Nice, I have one of the old ones almost done, I had to repress the nipple in it by estimating the size. Do they ever make anything close...???
