Correct Hood Latch Finishes
 

Would like to confirm the correct finishes for the hood latch parts on both the parts that bolt to the hood and the parts that bolt to the core support brace. Is it all bare steel? Anyone have some pics of these areas on correctly restored cars? Thanks

It was gray phosphate, both pieces. Some have painted the catch spring black but I've never seen an original that showed signs of black paint.

The springs are black, most likely lacquer dipped.

Jim, for the hood latch mechanism on a 1969 Camaro, the portion of the assembly that bolts to the hood is zinc (medium grey) phosphate, the spring is painted full gloss black and the attaching bolts are manganese (dark grey) phosphate. The portion of the assembly that bolts to the header panel and rad support is zinc phosphate, the attaching bolts are manganese phosphate and the bolts that attach the horns (2) are either clear (silver) zinc plated or manganese phosphated. I'm not sure what car and year you are speaking of but based on others responding. I'm guessing they know you are speaking of a 69 Camaro only. But for others possibly reading this now or in future., this answer may differ depending on model and year.

Interestingly enough when I took mine apart the braket that bolts to the hood was gloss black on the visible surfaces (as was a lot of stuff on my car), but he surface that bolted to the hood was bare steel. The tapered head pin/bolt and spring retaining cup had gloss black paint on the surface facing toward the front of the car, but the engine side also looked like bare steel. The spring was gloss black all over which leads see to believe thats what the factory did since the backside of the pin and retainer were unpainted.

Correction....I took my bracket that bolts to the hold out in the daylight, and it is indeed light gray phosphate.

If it helps, mine is unrestored and the hood latch is in fact grey phosphate and my spring does have some black left on it.

Is the tapered head pin bare steel? How about the spring retainer cup?
