BB Chevy Nylon Timing Set - Years Used?

I have a 38,000-mile 1971 402 Impala that needs some engine work - and I'm wondering if it would have had the nylon timing gear set from the factory (in which case I'd R&R it with a new steel timing set).

Thanks,
Tony

If original then it would have the nylon.

Yes,GM used them throughout the 1960's/70's.Unless someone has already changed it before you,I would.

Thanks...guess I'll be getting on that.

Timing gear/chain...

The last one I did was so loose it just about fell off in my hand when the timing cover was removed...and that was on a 33,000 mile car :frown:

Best insurance for a big block...check those valve springs, keepers etc...they can be a problem, too.
