Muncie reverse cable adjustment

I needed to install a new cable on the reverse lock out on my Muncie shifter. When I adjust the cable so that the bottom blocker is sitting flush at the bottom of the handle, there is too much "slop" in the cable at the top. I have not installed the shift ball yet because I have not decided how short to cut the cable...
Anyone have some insight on this would really help me...

TIA

Anyone have an idea?

There's a spring inside the handle, right? It's been years since I've had mine apart. When you say "slop at to top", exactly what do you mean? Can you post a couple of pictures?

I played with the shifter again today. I think I'm going to have to wait until I get the tranny in the car and do the final shifter gate alignment. Right now the lockout plug does not ALWAYS drop back into the lock out position. I've tried to align the gates, mounted the shifter on the tranny on the bench and positioned the rods in the gears. But there is still a line up problem for the reverse positioning.

You have to set this up with the handle removed. The lug at the bottom of the handle needs to be up inside that sleeve about 1/8” when the lockout lever is released. If you have slack then the lug is bottoming out on the shifter before the handle is fully down. This lockout has nothing to do with the rest of the shifter adjustments.
