As already stated, Walker Dynomax Super Turbos are a good choice. IMO, the classic turbo style sounds much better than the Pypes race-pro / Magnaflow / Ultra-flo straight-through mufflers that are all the rage these days.

Ask Bruce (xplantdad) what they put on his nephew Tyler's 468 Chevelle - he posted a video this weekend and it sounded pretty good.

Very well known advantages of having a H or X pipe is added hp and tq.
But, another nice thing about either of them is that you lose the crackle or rapping sound....like a cherry bomb muffler makes. Kurt

Like Eric said, a H or X pipe will help greatly with less drone also. Kurt </div></div> Maybe so. I only have experience with one Flowmaster system; the one on my car. It has no drone. I am running headers, and it does have an integrated H pipe.

Glad you got that car too. But without the "X" or "H" pipe, the exhaust fits tighter to the trans cross-member, it is just so much ease to work on the trans,cross-member,and the rest of that stuff remains. I can pull out the trans,on my car without the "X" or "H" pipe on it,with out touching the exhaust system. But a True Turbo Muffler would help. I have True Corvair Turbo's Mufflers on my car and love them. Have fun and good luck with your sbc.

Jake </div></div> Just looked at Bruce's post and he indicated he has the Pypes system. Jake |

I agree that the Crossover pipes are kind of a PITA. I used to love dropping the exhaust on my Chevelle at the track and running the open headers. Pulled them off to the side and put 1 bolt back in the collector just to hung them up. I installed a Flomaster full system with an H-pipe and never dropped the exhaust since.
Now that I'm typing this, I realize how much I missed that feeling at the track. Here is what I plan on doing, and I think it would be a great option for this original situation where a muffler change is in order. I've used these V-band clamps on turbo cars in the past. They are an excellent way to manage exhaust pipe, allowing for simple removal and re-installation without any leaks. So I plan installing these on at least the front side of my mufflers so I can easily drop out the H-pipe system. |

I purchased the 2-1/2" stainless kit from Magnaflow with the X pipe. I've pulled my trans out multiple times. I unhook them at the collector. That lowers the exhaust far enough to get the trans out.
I should clarify that I had a 427 450hp (guessing) with Flowmasters on my Nova and it was horrible. I have a friend with the original Flowmasters (2-1/2" ![]() Kurt
