I guess those mechanics weren't doing a very good job if the cars they were maintaining were considered clunkers by their owners!

That’s not the entire picture. And therefore it’s an erroneous statement.

Simply put, a car can run well mechanically but still have a poor fuel economy rating. Also a mechanically” fit” car can still have very little economic value. These two examples can be considered clunkers regardless of the mechanics ability.

It wasn't even an erroneous statement, it was clearly meant as a joke, therefore it is a joke statement.

Toyota led the field in sales during the program. But, they do build some Toyotas in the US so it ain't all bad. I read that one of the foreign manufacturers brought back 3,000 employees to full-time status at a plant in Alabama (I think) so there's a small boost to American jobs right there.

I had my Camaro out for a drive a couple of hours ago and the local Chevy dealership looked like it had been picked almost clean of new cars and trucks. Saw their clunker trade-ins stuffed on the far end of the lot too. Almost makes me wish I had a clunker to trade in on a new pickup.

I stopped at a dealership in Austin yesterday to look at the Clunkers and there were some very nice used cars with "clunker" written on the window. The salesperson said that there are lots of potential buyers interested in these cars, but they can't be sold. It hurts the used car market very much.

I mean, there were some decent cars in nice shape that people traded in. Some had good tires and wheels, interiors in nice shape, lots of good body panels. What a shame to crush these cars. Can they pull wheels and tires off them even? How about hoods, fenders or interior parts?

I thought they had to have the engines destroyed but that they could be used for parts. I haven't read that they had to be crushed. Maybe I missed that somewhere.
