Default 1969 Firebird

Hi ! I visited a friend in Hyltebruk Sweden today and he showed me the Firebird he bought in C.T. earlier this year. The car had a 350 engine from the factory but he is not sure of what´s in it now. Can you tell ?

He is still working on it but expects to be more or less ready later this fall. Here is a before pic.

The side of the block will have the size on it:

The date code will be on the top at the rear, as well as the casting number:

The 7H1 cylinder head was used on the 1972 350/160 and 175 horsepower 2bbl engine. Valves are 1.96/1.66 resulting in 7.6 to 1 compression ratio.
The "YW" stamping looks kind of weird like there is something stamped under the "W".

Verify the numbers/dates in my above photos and post them. We can then tell you what it is/was.

You never go by just the cylinder heads since Pontiac fans tend to swap heads to make different compression ratio combinations (like what we are doing with Gramma's car - adding the 96 CC 1975 6X-4 heads from the ultra low 7 to 1 compression 1975 350 to a 455 block will give you a 9.5 to 1 ratio 455.

That is most likely a 72 YR BLOCK with the original heads that somebody tried to bluff as an original 69 firebird ram air engine. Somebody definitely restamped that W for sure. On a good note it's an original Matador Red car with black roof.

Thanks guys, I´m waiting for my friend to find the numbers on the block so that we can verify what he has.
He´s building it the way he wants it, like if he had been sitting with the salesman ordering it new. He will probably put a red interior in it.
I´ll get back as soon as I get the numbers.

Don, looking at that engine stamp, it doesn't appear to have been "YR", but perhaps a "YP"? I don't see the stem of the "R" in there. The "W" definitely looks like a restamp.

I thought of that too but I was going with the odds that the block and heads are matching original and there is no yp listed in 72. Either way it's a nothing BLOCK value wise.

Hi guys !

My friend never came back to me with the numbers, but he wants to thank you for your help. He says that the engine is indeed a 1972 350. Nothing special from the factory, but it seems to pack more horsepower now. Probably a little more compression and a healthier cam.
