Do the DZ 302's have the VIN number anywhere else than on the front pad? I have one in my '68 that came from a '69 Z but they decked the block so those numbers are gone. Wasn't sure if they ever stamped them elsewhere on the block. </div></div>

Depends when the car was made and where. Norwood cars started putting vins by the oil filter late December of 68. Los. cars switched back and forth through the year. A link to a CRG research of the topic: http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#PartialVINs

Thanks Kurt Sonen and others who have compiled this information.

As far as your decked block, check the casting number to see if it may fall into the time frame of oil filter pad stamps. Then, look at the Los. as well time frames (a little trickier). Some will post how their car has an engine built 6 months before the car, I know that is possible, but at this point, post decking, what else do you have to go from?

Thanks for the info. I'd eventually like to change the 302 out for a small block with a blower and reunite the DZ (if possible) to the original Z.

Thanks bbbentley, I'll have to get under it with a mirror sometime just to see. As stated, changing it out for a blown small block is a long term goal, so I'm fine with it now.

The orange car does have the 7K tach, and it has a clock too, and it also has a 4spd console with gauges that are white face, which throws me off (thought that would be black face?). My black car has the console, but no gauges on it, nor does it have the clock.
The orange car also has the black plastic w/woodgrain steering wheel with RS on it (whereas my L78 has SS on its).
Fyi.

The 7k tach is correct for an early car, silver face console gauges are correct for Camaro. Black would be for Nova I believe. Clock is part of the console gauge package. The RS is correct for the steering wheel shroud on an RSZ, woodgrain would be correct for interior decor (pedal trim/pass. side grab handle) and included with deluxe interiors.

thats good to hear. I think its a neat car and I am trying to move forward on it. It has a speed minder too, I guess that is rare. It's positioned at 90

So its hard to buy a car without paperwork, as I think the Z28s out there without that are 50K(60?) restored cars. Is this still good sense to buy it if its solid for 25K-27K? Thats where I am at on it. I can see 20-30K in average joe restoration costs on it easily (not like supercarworkshop ofcourse), so then why buy it, unless one wants to have it restored the way they want to. If it has paperwork, its maybe alot higher than 50/60K restored, I am sure.

The options and the way the car is set up, are killing me, its just that lack of paperwork. Got closer and then 'my' reality set in, causing to pause for a while...maybe offer less than what I think it should be. Maybe the options 'found on a rough car' help in documenting it as a real Z besides just the tag? That is what I am thinking.
