How in the heck does the shifter shaft turn to solid rust but the reverse pull-up thingy and knob stay looking nice?

edit: Duh, just occurred to me, they're probably plastic.....guess I always assumed they were metal

With all that original documentation, it would sure be a shame if the original engine is junk.
