Chris,,,,I am correcting myself....
The MALIBU in fact does NOT use the woodgrain on the tailgate. My feeble brain is so used to seeing the Concours and a couple El Camino's around here WITH the woodgrain that I went off the rails. Apologies!!  That said, it seems more plausible that it is in fact original paint. One thing though, in the Jim Mack auction it clearly does not have the tail light lens trim. In the previous dealer's pix it does have the trim??
